Full disclosure: This is not a Galley Pirates recipe. This is a galley story too cool not to share…

Never in my lifetime would I have imagined this: a sailboat turned New York style pizzeria...take out and delivery...floating right smack in the middle of paradise! But it’s true. And dare I say it’s the best pizza I’ve ever had! Some may argue, but it certainly is just as good as the best NY pizza I’ve ever had. Throw in the Virgin Islands, a crystal blue sea, a setting sun, and intoxicatingly divine cocktails to go…and yup it IS the best pizza I’ve ever had! This is Pizza Pi!

It was our first evening on beautiful SV Solitude. Anchored in Christmas Cove off the St Thomas Harbor, Captain Gary called in our order on VHF 16: two Madd Mushrooms and one Dalai Lama. Do we want that delivered to our vessel? Nope. I needed to check this place out in person!

Apparently it’s the brainchild of owners Alexander (Sasha) and Tara Bouis. Sasha is a NY native and an MIT grad; Tara a teacher from Indiana. They met in the Caribbean and crewed charter cats with Sasha as captain and Tara as chef. They bought an old aluminum sailboat, made it into a big floating galley, took pizza classes in NY and started my dream business. Their galley includes a brick-lined oven complete with a marble stone for crispy crusts. Everything is made from scratch. And the flavors are “magnifique!”

Jennie was working as chef this evening. Take a look at this galley! It’s got everything you need, complete with herbs in the window.

And did I mention they have cocktail specials? TO GO!!! Just take a look at this menu and see if you don’t agree that this is just a little bit of paradise right in the middle of paradise.

Have you ever had a curry sauce on a pizza? Well their Dalai Lama is a head-snappingly “what just entered my mouth?” kind of pizza. I thought some day I would try to duplicate it…along with their Madd Mushroom’s porcini mushroom sauce. But I know this galley pirate just wouldn’t do it justice.

Farewell to Sally and Jennie! We drop tips in their jar swinging from the open stern and leave in our dinghy with steaming hot pizzas. They “Accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and Children who are great at washing dishes” so we made sure to pay up! I’d hoped to come back again, but 3 pizzas for 4 people kept us in leftovers for days. But I WILL be back again….someday.
